The smartphone in your pocket is convenient – and a powerful surveillance tool. But it’s not just authorities that use this capability. Criminals, competitors or careless employees can also unintentionally turn mobile devices into security risks. We show the dangers and solutions.
The Invisible Danger in Your Pocket
Smartphones have long been more than just phones. They contain:
- High-resolution cameras (often several)
- Highly sensitive microphones (for voice assistants)
- GPS receivers (accurate to a few meters)
- Acceleration sensors (detect movement and vibrations)
- Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (automatically connect to the environment)
- Large storage (for photos, videos, recordings)
Most of these functions are permanently active – often without the user knowing or wanting it.
How Smartphones Unintentionally Monitor
1. Round-the-Clock Location Tracking
Hardly any smartphone user completely disables location tracking. Apps such as weather services, maps, social networks or delivery services regularly query the GPS location – and often store it.
Consequence for security companies:
An employee traveling to a sensitive deployment location leaves a digital trail. Anyone with access to their location data (e.g. Apple, Google, the mobile provider or a hacked account) can trace: Who was where and when?
2. Cameras as Covert Recording Devices
Smartphone cameras are tiny, powerful and always at hand. A visitor in a meeting room, a cleaner in the server room or a “forgotten” smartphone on the table – and confidential documents, access codes or security measures can be photographed.
Special danger:
The camera can be activated remotely (through malware or even certain USSD codes). The owner notices nothing while the device silently takes photos or videos.
3. Microphones – Always Present
Voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa are constantly listening for their wake word. For this, they must use the microphone permanently. Theoretically, it would be possible to use the microphone without a wake word – whether through an app with excessive permissions or through malware.
Security risk:
Confidential conversations, meetings with clients, announcements by security personnel – everything could be recorded without anyone suspecting anything.
4. Motion Sensors Reveal Activities
Modern smartphones contain acceleration sensors and gyroscopes. This data can analyze whether a person:
- is standing, sitting or lying down
- is going up the stairs
- is moving quickly (running)
- is opening a specific door (vibration)
Even without GPS, a movement profile can thus be created – for example, by reading out the sensor data via a website (without app installation!).
5. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Tracking
Even when GPS is off, the smartphone constantly emits Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals. These are unique and can be used to identify and track individuals – for example, through Wi-Fi sensors in shopping centers, train stations or even on lampposts.
The Challenges for Security Services Today
Challenge 1: No Control Over Visitor Smartphones
Unlike with own employees, you cannot require visitors in a sensitive building to turn off or hand over their smartphones. And even an “off” button is no guarantee – modern devices can continue to transmit in the “off” state.
Approach:
- Faraday bags / shielding pouches for visitors in high-security areas
- Mobile jammers (only with official approval, heavily regulated in Germany)
- Sensors that detect active mobile devices (e.g. by detecting typical transmission frequencies)
Challenge 2: Own Employees Are a Risk
Not maliciously, but carelessly: A security employee posts a photo of the coffee machine – and in the background of the image is an access code. Or the private calendar is synchronized with the work phone and reveals deployment locations.
Approach:
- Strict policies for private phones in the workplace (storage in lockers, use only in break rooms)
- Work phones with restricted functions (no camera, no GPS, no app store)
- Regular awareness training
Challenge 3: Targeted Espionage Through Malware
Attackers attempt to install malware on smartphones via fake apps or phishing links. This can then:
- Read contacts and messages
- Retrieve photos and videos remotely
- Activate microphone and camera
- Transmit location in real time
Approach:
- Mobile Device Management (MDM) for all company devices
- No installation of apps from unknown sources
- Regular security updates
- No connection of private and business apps on the same device
Challenge 4: Legal Grey Areas
May a security service confiscate a visitor’s smartphone? May an employee be monitored to see if they are using their private phone during an assignment? The legal situation is complex and often not clearly defined.
Approach:
- Clear regulations in house rules, works agreements or employment contracts
- Prior information (e.g. signs: “For security reasons, active smartphones are not permitted in this area”)
- In case of doubt, legal review

1. AI Automatically Detects Smartphone Use
Modern video surveillance with AI can already detect whether someone is taking out their smartphone and filming or photographing with it. In the event of an alarm, a security officer can intervene.
2. Automatic Deactivation Through Near-Field Communication
In sensitive areas (e.g. meeting rooms with security clearance), transmitters can be installed that automatically put nearby smartphones into airplane mode or deactivate them – however, only if the operating system supports this function (not yet widespread).
3. Detectors for Active Mobile Devices
Mobile or permanently installed sensors detect the typical radio frequencies of smartphones (2G/3G/4G/5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth). This makes it possible to determine whether a device is active – and sometimes even its approximate position.
4. Privacy-Friendly Countermeasures
New technologies detect smartphones without storing personal data. Instead of identifying each device, only “An active mobile device is in Room 3” is registered. This enables intervention without invading privacy.
